Gorkha

Birthplace of a Kingdom — Home of the Gurkhas

The hillside town where Nepal's unification began — birthplace of King Prithvi Narayan Shah and legendary home of the Gurkha soldiers. Gateway to the Manaslu Circuit and a town where history breathes through its stone palace walls.

Location

Where Is It?

Gorkha is a small district headquarters town in the Gandaki Province of central western Nepal, approximately 140 km west of Kathmandu. Perched at around 1,000m on a forested ridge, it commands views of the Budhi Gandaki river valley below and, on clear days, an extraordinary panorama of the Manaslu-Himalchuli-Baudha Himal massif to the north.

Gorkha is the historic heartland of the Shah dynasty — it is where King Prithvi Narayan Shah was born, raised, and from where he launched his campaign to unify the many small kingdoms of Nepal into a single nation in the 18th century. The town also lends its name to the legendary Gurkha soldiers, Nepali warriors (primarily of the Gurung, Magar, and Thapa ethnic communities) who have served in the British, Indian, and Nepalese armies with extraordinary distinction.

Access

How to Get There

Gorkha is about 5–6 hours by road from Kathmandu (approximately 140 km via the Prithvi Highway to Dumre, then a 24 km side road to Gorkha town). Buses and jeeps operate from Gongabu Bus Park in Kathmandu. The road to Gorkha town itself climbs steeply from the Prithvi Highway junction.

Alternatively, 20-minute helicopter connections from Pokhara make the town accessible for productions requiring rapid on-location travel. Gorkha is also the starting point of the Manaslu Circuit trek, one of Nepal's most challenging and scenic restricted area treks.

Production Tips

Filming Highlights

  • Gorkha Durbar (Palace Complex) — A beautifully preserved Newar-style palace complex atop the ridge, housing the Gorakhnath Temple, the Tallo Durbar (lower palace), and Kalika Temple. The approach via a long stone staircase through forest is itself cinematic.
  • Gurkha Heritage — The town is saturated with Gurkha military history — monuments, museums, and living veterans make compelling subjects for documentary filmmaking.
  • Manaslu Views — On clear mornings, the snow-capped Manaslu (8,163m — 8th highest in the world) looms magnificently to the north.
  • 2015 Earthquake Epicentre — Gorkha district was the epicentre of the devastating April 2015 earthquake. Restored and rebuilt villages, resilient communities, and contrast between old and new make for powerful documentary material.
  • Rural Hill Life — Traditional Gurung and Brahmin/Chhetri hill village life, terraced farming, and local festivals offer authentic, unspoiled rural Nepal cinematography.
