Lumbini

Birthplace of the Buddha — An Island of Peace

The sacred birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama — the Buddha — is one of the world's most spiritually significant sites. A UNESCO World Heritage Site of remarkable tranquility, ancient temples, and monasteries built by nations from across the Buddhist world.

Location

Where Is It?

Lumbini is located in the Rupandehi District of the Lumbini Province in southern Nepal, just 25 km north of the Indian border town of Nautanwa/Sunauli. It sits in the flat Terai plains at approximately 90m elevation.

The Lumbini Sacred Garden — the epicentre of the site — is where the Maya Devi Temple marks the exact spot of the Buddha's birth, adjacent to the famous Ashoka Pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BCE. Surrounding the garden is the UNESCO-planned Lumbini Development Zone — a 4.8 km × 1.6 km area of monasteries, gardens, and a central canal. Countries from across the Buddhist world (Tibet, Thailand, Japan, China, Korea, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Germany, France...) have each built distinctive national monasteries, creating a remarkable architectural survey of Buddhist traditions.

Production Tips

Filming Highlights

  • Maya Devi Temple & Sacred Garden — The archaeological core, with ancient brick foundations, the sacred pond (Puskarini), and the Ashoka Pillar. Serene and visually extraordinary at dawn and dusk.
  • International Monastery Zone — Each of the 20+ national monasteries is architecturally distinct — from the golden Thai pagoda to the minimalist Japanese peace stupa — offering a world tour of Buddhist architecture within a single location.
  • World Peace Flame — A perpetually burning flame symbolising world peace, a striking visual centrepiece for documentary and contemplative filmmaking.
  • Seasonal Atmosphere — Buddhist pilgrims from across Asia, monks in saffron and crimson robes, and the profound stillness of the gardens create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Nepal.
  • Sunrise / Sunset — The flat Terai geography and unobstructed horizon create spectacular low-angle golden-hour light highly valued by cinematographers.
